What’s involved in renovating a kitchen?

When taking on a kitchen renovation project, we usually consider the following elements:

  2. Cabinets Selection (custom, semi-custom, stock)
  3. Countertop Selection (marble, granite, laminate, quartz)
  4. Island Selection (if required)
  5. Fixtures Selection (Range Hood/Vent Fan, Sink, Faucets, drain and traps)
  6. Flooring Selection (Tile, sheet vinyl, hardwood, laminate)
  7. Lighting (Ceiling lighting, canister lighting, under-cabinet lighting)
  8. Backsplash (glass mosaic, ceramics, natural stone)
  9. Appliances Selection (if required)
  10. Painting
  11. Plumbing
  12. Electrical
  13. Ventilation

Types of Kitchen Remodeling:

Once you know the answers to those questions, then you can think about how much change you’d want to make to the layout and the floor plan for you kitchen. The following are several possible types of kitchen remodeling that you may consider. Starting from the basic towards the most challenging and expensive:

  • Requires plumbing, electrical work

Changing the traffic pattern: (approximate cost runs at $10,000-$35,000)

  • Includes most of the “changing the layout” jobs
  • Might include adding an island, new window, installing the skylight
  • Might include adding/removing the door or opening up/removing a wall

Expanding the space from the inside: ($20,000 and up)

  • Includes elements from “changing the traffic pattern”
  • Involves annexing the closet, opening up a larger wall
  • Includes rearranging and replacing cabinetry
